“Akira Ifukube, wrote a marimba concerto in 1976. The American premiere took place at the annual Music from Japan Festival in 1981 in New York’s Carnegie Hall, with Keiko Abe as soloist with the American Symphony Orchestra.73 Ifukube is especially well known for his film scores, including the 1954 movie Gojira. His music is influenced by Japanese folk songs and frequently uses “pentatonic and other oriental scales.”  – Christine Conklin
