Composer’s Name: Snider, Sarah Kirkland

Title of Piece: Thread and Fray (2006)

Number of Percussion Players: 1

Total Number of Players: 3

Instrumentation: bass clarinet, viola and marimba

Approximate length: 5 min.

Program Note:

Thread and Fray is scored for viola, bass clarinet, and five-octave marimba.  As the title implies, the work weaves long lines that intertwine to create a rich timbral fabric.  There are moments when rhythmic and harmonic dissonances create “frays” in that fabric, but a beautiful tapestry is still created.

Thread and Fray was written for the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble.
