Andr\u00e9 Jolivet\u2019s Suite en Concert for Flute and Percussion \u00a0was the composer\u2019s\u00a0second concerto for flute. A prolific French composer, Jolivet\u2019s works are\u00a0regularly performed worldwide. Jolivet\u2019s reputation as a staunch individualist is\u00a0demonstrated by his vast compositional output of more than 200 works, many\u00a0of which were groundbreaking for their time. Jolivet sought \u201cto give back to\u00a0music its original ancient meaning, when it was the magical, the incantatory\u00a0expression of the religious beliefs of human groups.\u201d Suite en Concert achieves\u00a0this in no small way by combining the earthly ancient sounds of drums and flute,\u00a0some of the earliest instruments known in existence. In four movements, Suite\u00a0en Concert is a jewel of melodic beauty, virtuosic flute composition and sensitive\u00a0percussion composition. The four percussionists rapidly navigate a battery of\u00a0drums, woodblocks, cymbals and rattles to accompany the sustained and often\u00a0melodically disjunct flute part.<\/p>\n
