Etude for a Quiet Hall, Christopher Deane

A work of medium difficulty for 4.3 octave marimba with 4 mallets. The piece is a study in space and time, making much use of silence and very soft dynamics. Limited material is presented and developed and repeated which all requires great poise from the performer. Effective textures are employed by sustaining a soft roll on a single note with the inner 2 mallets while playing moving lines in counterpoint with the outer 2 mallets. The main ideas of the piece are interrupted once by a section of fast moving 32nd notes but the dissipates back into the original texture for the final section of the piece.

This work makes for a great change of pace in any recital program
