GRAB IT!, Jacob TV

For 4.5 octave marimba, 2 woodblocks, 2 tom toms, cymbal, bass drum (with pedal) and pre-recorded tape

The tape sounds for this piece are derived from recordings of interviews with prisoners on death row in the USA. Their words have manipulated into a hip hop style vocal part that becomes the rhythmic backbone of the piece. From these vocal patterns the composers has generated pitched material for the marimba that is played in exact unison with the tape. The small percussion setup is used to accent certain ‘hits’ in the vocal part and to keep the pieces’ intention of being aggressive and loud. The composer suggests amplification for the marimba
